YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Dr. Nik Mohd Kamel bin Nik Hassan, who was born in 1953, is the founder and Executive Chairman of Dr. Nik & Associates Sdn. Bhd. (DNASB). Popularly known as “Dato’ Nik”, he had obtained his first professional qualification in Civil Engineering from the University of Southampton, England in 1976. This was followed by a B.Sc. (Hons) and then M.Sc. (Hons) in Civil Engineering in 1979 and 1981 respectively from the same university. In 1985, he obtained his PhD in Hydraulics Engineering from University of Manchester’s Institute of Science and Technology in the United Kingdom.
Dato’ Nik had begun his career in academia and eventually rising to the position of Associate Professor in the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Malaya (UM). He also served as a Referee for the Institution of Engineers Malaysia’s (IEM) Journal and Bulletin from 1987 to 1991 and as Director of Universiti Malaya’s Consultancy Unit in 1992.
After 14 years in academia–as a student, tutor, lecturer and professor–Dato’ Nik then transitioned into the practical field of engineering to apply the expertise he had both acquired and shared. He had initially started Dr. Nik & Associates as a sole proprietorship in 1993, and the company was incorporated in its present form a year later. Under his leadership, guidance and initiatives over the 30-plus years since then, the company has expanded from its base and headquarters in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur. On its own and through its associate companies, DNASB has been involved in many engineering consultancy and management projects in Malaysia and also overseas. Its success in these projects has turned Dr. Nik & Associates into one of Malaysia’s most respected firms in the industry, renowned for its reliability, credibility and proven track record.
From 1993 onwards, he has directed and also provided technical advice and input for all water resources and coastal engineering projects undertaken by DNASB. These covered detailed designs for flood mitigation, river modelling, hydrological analysis, urban drainage design, water resources management, environmental impact assessment, coastal engineering design and modelling, dredging and land reclamation projects. The company’s clients over the years include government and semi-government agencies like the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID/JPS), Public Works Department (PWD/JKR), Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) and Penang Port; and corporations that include Petronas, Malakoff, Eastern & Oriental Berhad (E&O), UEM Construction and Siemens KWU.
