The Proposed Penang Second Bridge, Pulau Pinang, MALAYSIA

UEM Builders Sdn. Bhd. shall construct the Penang Second Bridge in Penang as an additional link between Penang Island and the mainland. It will connect Batu Kawan on the mainland and Batu Maung on Penang Island. The total length of the bridge is 22.5 km. Once completed, it will become the longest bridge in Southeast Asia with bridge span 15 km across the Southern Channel (i.e. the channel between Penang Island and Seberang Perai). In terms of water-related activities, it is anticipated that the development will include the construction of bridge piers, dredging at Batu Kawan (to remove unsuitable material and replacing suitable fill for construction) and reclamation at Batu Kawan (to provide connection with the existing road network on Penang Island).

The main tasks for the Hydraulic and Coastal Engineering Studies for the project includes:

  • Extensive hydraulic and coastal modeling of the impact of the bridge construction on coastal regime within the Penang channel and adjacent waters using MIKE 21 modeling system. These investigation includes assessment on waves, tidal flows, sediment transport and dispersion of suspended sediment;
  • Investigation on the impact during construction based on various components and implementation stages; and
  • To provide assessment input for the concurrent EIA study undertaken by UKM Pakarunding Sdn. Bhd.
